How is Sarkari Salary Calculated? (7th Pay Commission)

The 7th Pay Commission (7th CPC) introduced the Pay Matrix system, replacing the old Pay Bands and Grade Pay system. Your final "In-Hand" or Net Salary is calculated by adding your basic pay and allowances, then subtracting mandatory deductions.

Key Components of Govt Salary

  • Basic Pay (मूल वेतन): The base component of your salary determined by your Pay Level in the 7th CPC Matrix.
  • Dearness Allowance (DA - महंगाई भत्ता): An allowance given to government employees to offset the impact of inflation. It is revised twice a year (January and July). As of 2024, the DA reached 50%.
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA - मकान किराया भत्ता): Given to employees who do not avail government accommodation. It is based on the city category (X, Y, or Z). When DA reached 50%, HRA rates were revised to 30%, 20%, and 10% respectively.
  • Transport Allowance (TA - परिवहन भत्ता): Provided to compensate for commuting expenses. TA depends on the employee's Pay Level and City category. Additionally, DA is calculated on TA.

Common Deductions (कटौती)

  • NPS (National Pension System): A mandatory deduction of 10% of (Basic Pay + DA) towards the pension corpus. The government also contributes 14% to your NPS account.
  • CGHS (Central Government Health Scheme): A small monthly deduction for comprehensive medical coverage. Varies from ₹250 to ₹1000 depending on Pay Level.
  • CGEGIS: Central Government Employees Group Insurance Scheme (usually ₹30 to ₹120).
  • Income Tax & Professional Tax: Subject to individual tax slabs, savings, and state rules.

Formula: Net Salary = (Basic Pay + DA + HRA + TA) - (NPS + CGHS + CGEGIS + Taxes)
